THE 25 MOST COMMON MISTAKES STUDENTS MAKE IN CHOOSING A COLLEGE

Decide that there is only one “right” college.
Only look at colleges your best friend is looking at.
Choose a college based on the quality of their athletic teams.
Rely on the rankings in news magazines.
Go to college where your girl/boy friend is going.
Choose a college because it is the last place mom or dad want you to go
Apply to colleges that you don’t really like because you think it will make your parents proud or impress your friends.
Go to the college with the best party scene.
Choose a college without investigating campus safety.
Look only at colleges within 50 miles of where you live.
Too shy to ask questions.
Don’t examine who you are and what you want from a college.
Consider the cost of the college in deciding where to apply.
Don’t visit a college or a similar type of college before applying.
Assume that all colleges are the same.
Consider only colleges that mom or dad attended.
Let the choice just happen instead of taking charge of your future.
Choose a college based on whether the student body is attractive.
Believe that the harder a college is to get into, the better it must be.
Apply only to prestigious colleges.
Rely on someone else’s opinion.
Rely on a college’s advertising.
Misjudge your ability to get admitted to a particular college.
Ignore the resources you have available to help.
Don’t adequately investigate your college choices.

Tips of the Month
Many
students put off college applications because they are fearful and anxious about the
dreaded essay, nor do they anticipate the amount of time required to
complete all aspects of the process. Rushing at the end of the process will only hurt the end
result-- getting IN.
*****
It can
seem as if you are judged these days completely on your GPA or SAT
scores. Just remember, this is really about the only time in your life
you will be called on to know so much about so many different things.
Hang in there. The person you are is truly what really matters in the
long run.

College is the foundation of a student’s future success. Therefore, finding the right college not only makes for happy students; it helps parents feel more confident about the result.
Students and parents are discovering that schools that a few years ago were considered second- and even third-tier schools have elevated their standards significantly. With more students applying, and in some cases fewer spots available, for the select colleges across the country, schools are demanding higher grades and higher test score criteria—seemingly placing college out of reach.
The applicant pool changes annually, thus nothing is carved in stone as to which students are accepted and which aren’t. However, the best chance of getting in to the school of your choice is to display your passion as to where you are headed in life, starting in 9th grade.
High school seniors know how difficult it is to get into the top-tier colleges today. Creating a persuasive, eye-catching application requires creativity, foresight, and a marketable presentation as to what you can offer a school.
The student must show schools why they are different from every other student applying. If you showcase your abilities through the development of a talented resume and a strong essay, admissions committees will fall in love with you!
Students must figure out how best to present themselves to admissions committees; difficulties arise when students begin feeling anxiety, their parents begin applying real or perceived pressure, and the student crumbles.
Finding the right school or college is one of the most important decisions a student and their family will make. Finding a school the will enrich and enhance a student’s life will not only allow for a positive college experience, but will have a life long impact his or her future.

families navigate the admissions process.
